It was an honor to speak on The Fabulous 413 with Monte Belmonte and Kaliis Smith for the 33rd Anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA)! It was such an amazing and inspiring group of people, and I feel that we could have talked for the entire day about disability, activism, and access. On the show was Digital Accessibility Specialist Shivaji Kumar, Visual Artist and Vice Chair of the Holyoke Disability Commission Lyn Horan, and Executive Director of Independent Living Resources Christos (Chris) Palames, who was at the signing of the ordinance in 1990! I also invited my lovely campaign manager Maria Guarino, a Teacher who is currently pursuing a doctorate in Education and Disability Studies.
Listen to the the segment here:
I am excited to celebrate the ADA, and also to continue to think about and reimagine access in Ward 4 with all of you. As I said yesterday on The Fabulous 413: "The ADA was and is a very effective law, but we still have a lot more work to do, because there are a lot of places who use the ADA as an excuse to not be more accessible."
What would an accessible Northampton look, feel, be like for you? Let me know! I am excited to reimagine with you.
Yours,
Jeremy Dubs
